Placing the wrong engine oil in an engine can have disastrous effects, not only for the consumer, but for the manufacturer's reputation as a high-quality producer. Setting aside the immediate cost of a recall, the loss of shelf-space during a recall will negatively impact your business, along with potential for lawsuits from consumers.
Never one to wait for something to go wrong, a major manufacturer of engine oils and lubricants reviewed their current quality control program and decided there were improvements to be made. The manufacturer started a project to improve the quality of its product labeling, and began to investigate different inspection technologies.
